Fight against incinerator goes on
Tuesday 31 August 2010
SDLP South Antrim MLA Thomas Burns has said he and residents in the Crumlin-Glenavy area are disappointed that the Environment Minister has decided to grant planning permission for a chicken waste incinerator in the area.
He said: "I don't agree with this decision and am very disappointed that Edwin Poots has saw fit to grant planning permission. The vast majority of people in Glenavy and Crumlin do not want this incinerator and are very annoyed that the decision has gone against them. I have taken many angry calls from people whose lives will be adversely affected by this decision.
"The residents have great fears that now this application has been granted, it will not be long until further applications -including incinerators for household waste- will be submitted for the area because the infrastructure and access will now be there.
"There are also concerns about the access for the site and if the villages of Crumlin and Glenavy will have to ferry all the lorry traffic. To say the local people are disappointed is an understatement and the feeling here is that this sort of site belongs in an industrial estate."
